CHAPTER 9

It was 7:32 a.m. when Vertigo’s private jet landed at LaGuardia airport. He had been awake for most of the flight. Vertigo had never been so anxious to get back home. His limo was waiting for him on the tarmac as he stepped off the plane. His driver greeted him with a smile and held the door open as Vertigo climbed inside.

When the driver got behind the wheel, he said, “Welcome back, sir. I’m sure you’re anxious to get home.”

“Actually, we gonna take a little detour,” Vertigo said as he pulled his cell phone out of his pocket. He called Angelique’s number. The call went to voicemail. He left a quick message: “Wake up, sleepy head. It’s me. Holla back at your boy when you get this.”

A few minutes later, Angelique returned his call. Vertigo took a deep breath. He could barely contain his excitement. Usually, he went out of his way to keep his cool, but he didn’t see the point of holding back with Angelique.

“Hey,” he said. “I’ve been thinking about you.”

“Really? I never would’ve guessed it from the way you’ve been avoiding my phone calls,” she snapped.

Vertigo swallowed. He hadn’t expected her to be angry with him. His hopes for reconciliation faded with each second. He said, “My bad. I just been busy.”

“Busy with Shontay?”

“She didn’t mean nothing to me–”

“I saw you two on the red carpet together.”

“Look, if I could take everything back, I would.”

“I really wanted to talk to you, Vernon.”

“I’m listening.”

Angelique sighed. “I don’t know… Part of me feels like it might be too late now.”

“Never that, ma. Come on, it’s me, baby. You best believe that you’re the only chick I let call me by my government name.”

“Can you just be serious for a minute and listen?”

“I can be whatever you want me to be.”

“I’ve been thinking about that night you dumped me. I know you must’ve been in shock when you saw that video, but trust me when I say that I was the real victim. If you really loved me, you would have stuck by me. If you’re gonna be in my life, you can’t be wishy-washy. I need a man I can count on.”

“And I promise to be that.”

“Vernon, there’s something you need to know about what happened to me–”

“Shhh. You don’t have to say another word about it. I believe you. It doesn’t even matter anyway ‘cause it’s all in your past. It was wrong of me to turn away from you. I should’ve never left your side, girl. I’m sorry for that. Can you forgive me?”

Angelique was silent.

“Hey? You still there?”

“I’m here,” she said.

“Did you hear what I said?”

“Yeah, I heard you, but I’m just still thinking about my answer.”

“Well, why don’t you tell me face-to-face?”

“When are you coming back from LA?” She paused. “I saw the awards. I was pulling for you. But never mind what those judges say, you’re still the most talented hip hop artist I know.”

Vertigo smiled. “Hearing you say that is the
