CHAPTER 9
It was 7:32 a.m. when Vertigoâs private jet landed at LaGuardia airport. He had been awake for most of the flight. Vertigo had never been so anxious to get back home. His limo was waiting for him on the tarmac as he stepped off the plane. His driver greeted him with a smile and held the door open as Vertigo climbed inside.
When the driver got behind the wheel, he said, âWelcome back, sir. Iâm sure youâre anxious to get home.â
âActually, we gonna take a little detour,â Vertigo said as he pulled his cell phone out of his pocket. He called Angeliqueâs number. The call went to voicemail. He left a quick message: âWake up, sleepy head. Itâs me. Holla back at your boy when you get this.â
A few minutes later, Angelique returned his call. Vertigo took a deep breath. He could barely contain his excitement. Usually, he went out of his way to keep his cool, but he didnât see the point of holding back with Angelique.
âHey,â he said. âIâve been thinking about you.â
âReally? I never wouldâve guessed it from the way youâve been avoiding my phone calls,â she snapped.
Vertigo swallowed. He hadnât expected her to be angry with him. His hopes for reconciliation faded with each second. He said, âMy bad. I just been busy.â
âBusy with Shontay?â
âShe didnât mean nothing to meââ
âI saw you two on the red carpet together.â
âLook, if I could take everything back, I would.â
âI really wanted to talk to you, Vernon.â
âIâm listening.â
Angelique sighed. âI donât know⦠Part of me feels like it might be too late now.â
âNever that, ma. Come on, itâs me, baby. You best believe that youâre the only chick I let call me by my government name.â
âCan you just be serious for a minute and listen?â
âI can be whatever you want me to be.â
âIâve been thinking about that night you dumped me. I know you mustâve been in shock when you saw that video, but trust me when I say that I was the real victim. If you really loved me, you would have stuck by me. If youâre gonna be in my life, you canât be wishy-washy. I need a man I can count on.â
âAnd I promise to be that.â
âVernon, thereâs something you need to know about what happened to meââ
âShhh. You donât have to say another word about it. I believe you. It doesnât even matter anyway âcause itâs all in your past. It was wrong of me to turn away from you. I shouldâve never left your side, girl. Iâm sorry for that. Can you forgive me?â
Angelique was silent.
âHey? You still there?â
âIâm here,â she said.
âDid you hear what I said?â
âYeah, I heard you, but Iâm just still thinking about my answer.â
âWell, why donât you tell me face-to-face?â
âWhen are you coming back from LA?â She paused. âI saw the awards. I was pulling for you. But never mind what those judges say, youâre still the most talented hip hop artist I know.â
Vertigo smiled. âHearing you say that is the
